One of our two aged coffees, Old Brown Java's story starts in the 16th century. The coffee beans were originally used as ballast in the bottom of boats and based on the colour of the beans as they aged, the sailors knew how long they’d been at sea.
Hailing from Indonesia, the Old Brown Java that I’ve picked is aged for at least two years. A bit of a Marmite coffee – love it or hate it – you must try it. Of course, I like it, but I also like marmite. If you haven’t tried this, it’s one for the list.
Ideal to brew in a paper filter to maintain its mature flavour profile in its cleanest, purest flavour.
The flavour of these Arabica coffee beans is truly unique, and similar only to our Monsoon Malabar in spiciness. The musky complex aromas are matched by the rustic earthy flavour notes. The long finish and big body makes this coffee especially impressive.
What You Will receive
Like all of our single origin coffees, our Old Brown Java coffee bean is freshly roasted by us at our traditional family-run coffee roastery in rural Kent. You will receive a bag of coffee that is very much a premium product, where the aromas and flavours will be exceptionally delicious and remarkably better than what you may be used to from the supermarket.

This is by far my favourite Coffee.. Whether you do Espresso, Cuppucino, long-flat-non-fat-acorn-milk- special, a regular Cafe Lungo or indeed a Cuban Colada this one fits them all. Strong flavour and low acidity make it an ideal "All Day" coffee.Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!]By BAzz Freeman

Coffee Bean Shop Ltd reply: Hi BAzz,
Thank you for taking the time to post your review.
It's "bean" said before that Old Brown Java (or OBJ as we call it) is a marmite coffee, you either love it or hate it. I'm thrilled you're in the former camp! It sounds like you achieve great results, whatever brewing method you choose. Thanks again for sharing your experience, we really appreciate it.
Kind regards, Jenni & all The Bean Team.
Now I’m still pretty new to all this grind your own and brew types etc but I’ve tried several different beans now so it was time to give this a go. Now I thought this one would be easy. However I’ve found it very unforgiving. Get it right with timings, grind, steep times etc and it’s a really nice coffee. Strong, spicy and Smokey. Good strong bold coffee, just how I need it sometimes. Get it wrong though and it’s bloody horrible. Try it though it’s definitely worth it.Rating: [4 of 5 Stars!]By vincent bell

Coffee Bean Shop Ltd reply: Hi Vincent,
Thank you for sharing your review of our Old Brown Java. It is known as a "marmite" coffee, you either like it or hate it! Sounds like you have experienced both ends of the spectrum depending on timings, grind etc. Please do get in touch to see if we are able to give any advice on a consistently good OBJ as we like to call it.
Thanks again and best wishes, Jenni & The Bean Team.
Having tried these beans, I now totally understand what Mr Lee said about them in his earlier review!
These beans are extremely versatile and compliment a variety of different coffee styles, from oat milk 'cappuccinos', (Fellows Prismo) 'Espressos', Americano's and general milky coffees.
These beans will stand up to rigorous experimentation with the ground size, ratios and bloom/brew and press times (Aeropress).
Yet another winner from the excellent team at the CBS.Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!]By Ian Gunn

Captain Smooth sat back and luxuriated in his old, familiar, worn leather armchair and lit his Ogdens' Nut Gone Flake filled meerschaum pipe.
He quickly disappeared in a sweetly spiced, aromatic cloud and thought to himself...
At which point, Rupert was abruptly awoken from his reverie by his wife, loud hailing 'Don't you DARE spill that coffee on our new rug'
He thought... Old Brown Java, truly a pleasant world away.Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!]By John Lee

A very unique tasting coffee with an earthy, musky flavour due to the ageing process and hints of tabacco.

Having tried a range of coffees over the last month, OBJ and Monsoon Malabar have turned out to be family favourites. I think it's the earthy flavours which make them stand out. I understand some other reviewers have found OBJ to be weaker than they expected, but my machine seems to have enough pressure to get the best out of these beans. We make a lot of flat white type drinks (100ml milk + double shot), but as an espresso it was excellent, tooRating: [5 of 5 Stars!]By Anthony Clarke

I've just had my first cup of Old Brown Java and i'm quite impressed.. As soon as I opened the bag of beans the smell was lovely. Even better once my machine had ground it and started brewing it.
Very nice, Will certainly be ordering it again I think!Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!]By Christopher Mayhew

Not tried Old Brown Java before. Before coming to the coffee bean shop had bought good quality ground coffee from Waitrose, in particular their Sumatran blend. I was at first a bit surprised that the old brown java was not a darker roast and thought it a bit 'weak' but it has grown on me. I now use more coffee for a stronger taste and I liek the spicy aroma and taste. It seems a good coffee for those who have a sotve pot which I much prefer to sue than a caffeteire (apologies for the mis-speling). Tend to have this coffee first thing in the morning and last thing at night and unlike the dreadful instant coffee I have to endure at work I only need two cups of proper coffee a day!Rating: [5 of 5 Stars!]By Matthew Leonard
